Bluebird Fantasy - SunYoung Park (PDF)
Instrumentation: solo alto saxophone
This piece is based on a Korean traditional ballad, or "Ta-Ryong", called "Bluebird Ta-Ryong." Several sections incorporate the primary theme of the ballad in a unique way. Melodic fragments, wispy bird calls, guttural bends, and a plethora of dramatic moments are woven throughout Bluebird Fantasy. As a Korean-born composer living in America, I wanted to channel my roots into a modern Western language. The music is based on a traditional Korean song, and through it, Korea's history and culture. Multiculturalism is at the heart of this work. -SunYoung Park
Bluebird Fantasy was commissioned by Jonathan Wintringham for the International Saxophone Academy's Young Artist Competition in 2022 and premiered by Wintringham in November of 2022.
